‘Take a step towards a slimmer face’

Everyone wishes to have a normal facial appearance. This includes a balance of all the features pertaining to face relating particularly to nose, cheek and chin. If any one of these component are disproportional than the face will appear abnormal. A protruding chin can be made proportional by adjusting the position of the front jaw bone. Chin augmentation using implants can help to balance the facial features and give the face a fresher natural look.
Chin augmentation procedure is often performed along with rhinoplasty in order to balance the facial features. Chin augmentation involves manipulation of the jaw bone and often gives better results in comparison to use of prosthetic implants. Chin implants helps to create a better face profile.
This procedure is quite famous because it is relatively easy to perform and often enhances the look of the entire face.

Different types of procedures

  1. Surgical chin augmentation
This is the most common type of surgery which makes use of chin implants. The chin implants used are of different types –

    1.  Silicone implants – These are the most common type of implants used for chin augmentation. These implants are soft, smooth, flexible and come in various shapes and sizes. These implants are quite smooth and so are easily removed.
    2.  Polyethylene – Polyethylene implants are quite hard, porous, slightly flexible and come in different shapes and sizes. These implants are much more difficult to be removed.
    3.  Polytetrafluoroethylene – Polytetrafluoroethylene is commonly by its chemical name ePTFE (expanded polytetrafluoroethylene). These implants are quite soft, flexible and strong.

In this procedure a small incision is made below the chin or inside the lower lip. A small pocket is created and implant is placed into this pocket. Some of the chin implants are attached to the mandible while others are usually placed in the pocket.

  1. Non-Surgical Chin Augmentation
This procedure uses hyaluronic acid based injectable filler. These fillers are usually temporary lasting for months to year and often require a top-up.
Possible risks and side effects of chin augmentation
Complications are usually minor and include slight swelling, haematoma, numbness and weakness of lower lip which usually go away after few days. Less common risks includes changes in bone structure, implant displacement and infection. A cosmetic surgeon can guide you well and minimise the risks of complications. It is recommended that following the procedure patients should eat soft food so that chewing is minimum.
